STEVE BEVERAGE
In the early 2000’s my artworks were highly influenced by a sculptural tradition begun in the early 20th Century called biomorphic abstraction. Artists such as Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi and Henry Moore all participated in this early modern movement in sculpture.
Many contemporary artists like Anish Kapoor, Tony Cragg and Louise Bourgeois have experimented with biomorphic abstraction ever since. Inspired by personal experiences and filtered through the lens of popular science I explored the organic process of making sculpture as a biological process. Using a variety of materials, I was most interested in the expressive potential of color and texture as well as interior and exterior form.
I decided to exhibit retrospective artworks in the context of the pandemic because of their viral/biological connotations. I’m interested in finding beauty in the sublime and grotesque qualities of disease and deformity.
